Rail Panel Case: Calcutta HC Extends Interim Protection from Arrest to Mukul Roy till 8 Nov 8
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday extended interim protection from arrest to BJP leader Mukul Roy in a case of alleged payout for a railway panel membership till 8 November.
A division bench comprising justices S Munshi and S Dasgupta adjourned the hearing of Roy’s plea till 5 November on a prayer by the West Bengal government.
Appearing for the state, public prosecutor Saswata Mukherjee told the court that the police have collected documents and materials relevant to the case and need time to verify these.
The division bench then said it will hear the matter after the Durga Puja vacation on 5 November and extended interim protection from arrest to Roy till 8 November.

SC Judge Justice M M Shantanagoudar Recuses from Hearing Plea of Disqualified Karnataka MLAs
Supreme Court judge Justice M M Shantanagoudar on Tuesday recused himself from hearing petitions filed by 17 disqualified MLAs of Karnataka challenging the decision of the then Speaker to disqualify them from the Assembly.
“In this matter, I am not participating” Justice Shantanagoudar, who was part of a three-judge bench headed by Justice N V Ramana, said at the outset.
The bench has now posted the matter for hearing on 23 September.
Iran Supreme Leader Rules out Negotiations with US
Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Tuesday ruled out negotiations with the US, as tensions mount between the arch-foes after Washington blamed Tehran for attacks on Saudi oil installations.
“The policy of ‘maximum pressure’ against the Iranian nation is worthless and all Islamic Republic of Iran officials unanimously believe there will be no negotiations with the US at any level,” he said, quoted on his official website.

In a politically significant development in Rajasthan, all six Bahujan Samaj Party MLAs have given a letter to the state assembly speaker to merge the legislative party with the Congress.
“The BSP MLAs met me and handed their letter about this,” Speaker C P Joshi told PTI on Monday night.
MLAs Rajendra Singh Gudha, Jogendra Singh Awana, Wajib Ali, Lakhan Singh Meena, Sandeep Yadav and Deepchand said they were merging their legislative party with the Congress.
“All the six BSP MLAs were in constant touch with Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and today (Monday) they have came into the fold of the Congress,” a Congress leader said.

South Korea Confirms First Swine Fever Outbreak
South Korea on Tuesday reported its first cases of African swine fever, becoming the latest country hit by the disease that has killed pigs from China to North Korea, pushing up pork prices worldwide.
Five pigs found dead at a farm in Paju, a city near the inter-Korean border, were confirmed to have been infected with the virus, an official with Seoul’s agriculture ministry told AFP.
“At this point, it’s too early to confirm if the case stemmed from the North,” the official added.
Seoul’s agriculture minister Kim Hyun-soo said 3,950 pigs from three farms in Paju were to be culled.
